The Trump administration has granted Anthropic permission to deploy its AI model, Mythos 5, to select companies and government agencies on Friday, June 26, 2026.
The announcement came after the Commerce Department had issued a directive to Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 last month.
The U.S. Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, wrote a letter addressing the Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown dated Friday, June 26.
Lutnick wrote, “I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Mode.”
However, the letter did not mention giving a nod to Anthropic’s approval to restore access to Fable 5.
The latest announcement by the Commerce Department is seen as a major step in negotiations between the Trump administration and Anthropic, which have been embroiled in a two week standoff over its latest AI models: Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
Hailing the decision by the Trump administration, Anthropic shared an update on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure.”
The company added while confirming the restoration to a select set of organizations.
For context, Anthropic and the Trump administration have been at loggerheads for quite some time.
Both parties have been engaged in a legal fight over an order to restrict government agencies from using Anthropic’s powerful AI tools.
Anthropic is pursuing a lawsuit against the Pentagon following after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth labelled it as a “supply chain risk.”
After Anthropic challenged the Trump administration’s directive in the court, the U.S. judge tossed the Pentagon’s directive.
