As Apple is set to have its traditional September launch event, the highly anticipated model is the iPhone 18 Pro Max with a significant camera upgrade.
The model is reportedly spearheaded by a brand-new Sony main sensor that introduces physical variable aperture support to the flagship device for the first time. Featuring a 48MP main camera built around a custom Sony IMX905 sensor, the hardware enables the lens to mechanically adjust light intake. This departs from current fixed-aperture designs.
This system is expected to give the user more control over the exposure levels, allowing the lens to open up and get brighter in low light scenarios and close down in bright scenarios to get maximum edge-to-edge sharpness.
Apart from the main lens, there are rumors of even more spectacular upgrades when it comes to the rest of the camera module. Both the ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses are said to get the 48MP sensor, giving the device unprecedented consistency across all the focal lengths. Moreover, the periscope telephoto lens should receive quite an upgrade, and the selfie lens is rumored to increase its resolution to 24MP.
This is highly beneficial for photography enthusiasts as it offers a more natural depth-of-field effect. Via this mechanical control, the heavy reliance on software-based portrait blur will be reduced, promising a DSLR-like bokeh that looks more organic and precise.
