US Postal Service imposes voter info rule for mail ballots despite court injunctions

US Postal Service imposes voter info rule for mail ballots despite court injunctions

The U.S. Postal Service has issued the latest regulations that limit mail voting on Friday, August 21, 2026.

The latest changes in regulations are seen in line with President Trump’s call to restrict the popular practice ahead of the midterms.

Despite the two federal court orders blocking the changes, the USPS finalised a rule on Friday night that would require states to share voter information with the federal government.

The changes come despite a pair of injunctions issued by federal courts in California and Massachusetts that currently block them from taking effect.

USPS shared the final rule online on Friday, August 21, which is set to be published in the Federal Register next week.

The Postal Service detailed its plan to carry out Trump’s executive order in a 95-page final rule.

According to the regulation, the USPS said that it would deliver mail ballots only in states that shared voter data with the federal agency.

In compliance with the order, the postal service would require states to give the US Department of Homeland Security and other agencies access to lists of voters and to adopt new balloting procedures before the mail agency would make deliveries.

If states did not comply, the USPS would refuse to deliver the ballots.

According to the text of the new regulation, the USPS is ready to implement the new restrictions on mail-in voting if the court injunctions are lifted.

President Trump signed an executive order in March that restricts the USPS from delivering ballots to voters not appearing on a Department of Homeland Security list of eligible citizens for each state.

The federal government has sued 30 states and Washington, DC, for refusing to hand over lists of eligible voters.
