San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested in Ohio over the weekend after authorities initially accused him of engaging in prostitution, before prosecutors amended the charge and he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors.
York, 46, was arrested Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio, and booked into the Columbiana County Jail, according to court records. He initially faced a charge described as “engaging in prostitution.”
The case moved quickly. Prosecutors amended the prostitution charge to misdemeanor disorderly conduct, while York also faced a separate misdemeanor charge for possessing criminal tools.
York pleaded no contest to both charges on Monday morning.
A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but it allows the court to impose a sentence without the defendant formally admitting the allegations.
What sentence did Jed York receive?
York was sentenced to one day in jail on each charge, with the sentences running concurrently. He received credit for the day he had already spent in custody, meaning he did not face additional jail time after Monday’s hearing.
He was also ordered to pay $1,150 in fines — $150 for disorderly conduct and $1,000 for possessing criminal tools.
York had previously posted a $5,000 bond following his arrest.
Reports also said authorities seized $160 from York, which was ordered to be forfeited to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force, while his cellphone was ordered returned.
Why was the 49ers owner arrested?
The precise circumstances behind the arrest have not been publicly detailed in the court records available so far.
The East Palestine Police Department worked with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force in making the arrest. York was reportedly taken into custody at a mobile home park in East Palestine, near the Pennsylvania border.
The initial prostitution allegation is important context, but it should not be described as York’s final conviction because prosecutors changed that charge to disorderly conduct before his plea.
Who is Jed York?
York has been closely associated with the 49ers for years. He became the team’s chief executive officer in 2008 and officially became its principal owner in 2024.
He is also a native of the area where he was arrested, having been born in nearby Youngstown, Ohio.
Under York’s ownership, the 49ers have remained one of the NFL’s most prominent franchises, reaching three Super Bowls without winning one, according to recent reporting.
The arrest also raises questions about whether the NFL could take any action against York under its Personal Conduct Policy. The league had not announced discipline at the time of the latest reports.
Meanwhile, the 49ers organization and East Palestine police had not publicly provided additional details about the incident in the latest reports.
The case has already been resolved at the local court level, with York having pleaded no contest, served his credited jail time and paid the fines. The potential impact on his position with the 49ers and any possible NFL action remains to be seen.
