A British Airways flight BA825 made a dramatic descent mid-flight due to a general emergency. The plane enroute from Dublin to London Heathrow successfully reached its destination at a low altitude without any major incident.
According to flight tracking data, the flight was cruising above Liverpool when the crew transmitted a squawk 7700 code, an international signal for general emergency.
The flight, operated by an Airbus A321neo with registration G-TNEI, then performed a control descent of around 8,000 feet before maintaining its direction at lowered altitude to the destination without the need for an emergency landing.
The exact nature of the emergency has not been revealed yet; however, the flight has successfully landed at London-Heathrow airport and the plane is currently taxiing to a remote stand of terminal 5.
The 7700 transponder code is used by pilots to alert air traffic controllers that an aircraft is experiencing a general emergency.
It does not, by itself, identify what has gone wrong on board. Pilots can use the code for a range of situations, including medical emergencies, technical problems or other circumstances requiring assistance from air traffic control.
In this case, the crew did not divert the aircraft to another airport.
Instead, BA825 continued towards London after the controlled descent, suggesting that the situation was considered manageable enough for the aircraft to complete its journey.
British Airways has yet to publicly disclose the nature of the emergency.
