Bruce Campbell isn’t letting cancer dictate how he spends the time ahead.
The Evil Deadstar has opened up about his prognosis, revealing that doctors are essentially looking at his condition as a five-year battle — though Campbell is refusing to let that number become a countdown.
During an appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, Campbell, 68, was asked about the cancer diagnosis he revealed earlier this year.
He confirmed that the illness is still present and said, “The current thing is a five-year deal.”
When host Adam Carolla asked, “So the prognosis is you have five years to live?” Campbell replied with characteristic bluntness: “Give or take.”
But the actor isn’t interested in spending those years obsessing over his diagnosis.
“I’ve decided, pretty specifically, to live with it, not die from it,” he said, explaining that he doesn’t want to get consumed by cancer forums or other people’s experiences.
Campbell first announced in March that he had a form of cancer that is “treatable, not curable.”
He has not revealed the type of cancer and previously stepped back from some conventions while focusing on treatment.
In August, he offered another reassuring update, telling PauseRewindthat he wasn’t experiencing symptoms. “When nothing is symptomatic, I don’t even know that I have anything,” he said.
And clearly, Campbell has no plans to sit around waiting. He has launched an 18-city screening tour for Ernie & Emma, a road-trip comedy he wrote, directed, produced and stars in.
Cancer may be part of his story right now. Campbell, however, seems determined to make sure it isn’t the whole story.
