King Charles’ rare 1954 photo shows holiday heartbreak

A charming childhood photograph has offered a window of a young King Charles experiencing a feeling many children know all too well, the sadness of leaving a favourite holiday behind.

The historic image shows Charles, then just five years old, looking unusually serious as he prepared to leave Balmoral Castle after the royal family’s Scottish summer break in 1954.

Dressed smartly in a shirt and tie with his hair neatly combed, the young prince can be seen sitting aboard the Royal Train on 31 May 1954, gazing out of the window as he made his way back to London.

Despite his royal surroundings, the photograph captures a very relatable moment as he was reluctant to say goodbye to a place filled with happy memories.

Balmoral has remained one of the most treasured places in the Royal Family’s calendar for generations.

Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, the estate has long been a private retreat where royals escape the formality of public life and enjoy family time surrounded by nature.

Decades before becoming King, he spent summers at Balmoral alongside his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, creating memories that would continue to shape his affection for the estate throughout his life.

The journey home was made even more memorable by the mode of transport itself.

The Royal Family’s relationship with the train dates back to 1840, when Queen Victoria became the first monarch to travel by rail.

Over the years, it became a favourite way for generations of royals to travel privately and comfortably across the UK.

The train includes bedrooms, bathrooms, a dining room and private spaces designed specifically for royal journeys, making it unlike any other mode of transport.

Queen Elizabeth II was also known to have a particular fondness for the Royal Train, using it for official engagements and personal journeys throughout her reign.
