New York Mets’ first baseman Jared Young was stretchered off after a horrific collision on the field with his teammate Nolan McLean.
During the play on Thursday night’s MLB game between the Mets and Philadelphia at Citi Field, Justin Crawford hit a grounder along the first-base line in the sixth inning.
Both Young and McLean, the Mets’ starting pitcher, crashed into each other to field the ball.
As Young attempted to jump toward the grounder, McLean tried to dive over his teammate.
As a result of the brutal collision, McLean’s knee hit what appeared to be the side of Young’s head during the play, knocking Young face-down onto the ground.
He lay on the ground motionless for several minutes until the medics rushed to rescue him.
The Mets’ trainers stabilised Young’s neck and examined him before he was carted off the field.
While leaving the ground, Young waived the crowd, raising his thumb to give a thumbs-up as fans cheered to show support.
The Mets’ manager, Andy Green, in a post-match press conference after a 3-0 loss to the Phillies, commented on McLean’s injury, saying he had a negative CT scan.
“It was a terrifying moment on a baseball field that took him a while to come to. It was a really scary collision,” said Green.
Young, who is in his first full big league season, has cemented his position as a regular first baseman with a batting average of .266 with nine homers and 39 RBIs in 103 appearances.
