Austin Abrams isn’t exactly having a quiet year.
After making waves in Weapons, the 30-year-old actor has now stepped into the lead of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot — and his character’s fate is far darker than audiences might expect.
Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier who gets caught in the middle of a deadly t-virus outbreak while trying to deliver an important package. But the real horror arrives when Bryan becomes infected himself.
Things get especially brutal when Bryan reaches the hospital, realising his infection is spreading. Unable to reach his girlfriend Michelle, he records a heartbreaking message admitting that he was wrong about their unexpected pregnancy.
“I think you’d be an amazing mom.”
But that message never reaches her.
Bryan eventually delivers the key ingredient needed for a cure, only for the plan to collapse at the last possible moment.
He loses himself to the infection, kills the scientists and ultimately becomes the very kind of monster players have spent years blasting away in the Resident Evilgames.
Abrams admits he was stunned when he first read the ending.
“I thought it was crazy and shocking when I first read it. You follow this one guy the whole time, so hopefully you’re enjoying watching him and rooting for him,” Abrams said.
“Then to have him not make it is really risky and gutsy, which is what I love about all of Zach’s work. So I was surprised by it, but I also loved that he would take that chance.”
For Abrams, the cruelest part is that Michelle never learns the truth.
“That’s part of the tragedy of it all. It’s so damn sad when you really think about it,” he shared.
“He changed and got better, but no one will ever know about it. There’s something really beautiful and tragic about that.”
