Google has officially announced the removal of Google Assistant for Android phones and tablets.
The company has started emailing users to announce that access to Assistant will be removed starting September 4, with the transition expected to take several weeks to reach all devices.
As mentioned in the email, once the transition takes place, users will not be able to use or revert to Google Assistant on their phones, tablets, or connected devices. Rather, users will have Gemini by default on their Android devices.
The transition will affect Android Phones and Tablets, Wear OS Smartwatches, Headphones and Earbuds, and Android Auto (projected from mobile devices). However, in cars with Google built-in, the Google Assistant will remain available even after September 4.
Earlier, Google confirmed that Gemini will eventually replace Assistant across all platforms, including Google TV, home speakers, and smart displays. The September 4 date appears to be specifically focused on mobile devices for now.
The company has been gradually increasing Gemini’s capabilities since its release. It is a next-generation AI-powered assistant that can have more natural conversations and handle more complex tasks. The company has decided to extend the deadline for Assistant’s retirement from 2025 to 2026.
Google stated in the statement: “We are committed to providing a smooth transition and are confident that Gemini will offer you an even more capable and helpful assistant experience.”
Those users whose devices are not compatible with Gemini or those who live in areas where Gemini is not yet launched can keep using Google Assistant until Google announces a full retirement plan. But, as for most of the new Android devices, the use of Gemini becomes inevitable.
