Rupert Lowe repeatedly refused to say whether he considers King Charles to be a “white Briton” during a tense exchange on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
The Restore Britain leader was questioned by presenter Nick Robinson about a report by former Reform UK candidate Matt Goodwin, which Lowe has previously cited.
The report claims white British people will become a minority in the UK by 2063.
Its definition of a “white Briton” has sparked debate because it states that both parents must have been born in the UK. By that measure, King Charles would not qualify, as his late father, Prince Philip, was born in Greece.
Robinson asked Lowe three times whether he believed the King was a white Briton. Each time, Lowe declined to give a direct answer.
“Many people have different interpretations of that, Nick,” he said. “We can split hairs.”
“We’re not splitting hairs,” Robinson replied. “Do you think the monarch of this country is a white Briton?”
Instead of responding directly, Lowe said the issue was clear to “most British people” and suggested they would agree with his views.
When Robinson pointed out that the report’s own definition excluded the King, Lowe accused the BBC of trying to “whitewash” wider concerns about immigration and demographics.
He also criticised diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, arguing that many people had grown tired of them.
As Robinson again noted that the question had gone unanswered, Lowe returned to the report’s main argument, saying that “by 2063, white British people will be a minority on current trends.”
Robinson hit back, saying: “You’re a man with money and a grudge and a social media account who airs his prejudices on X and gets a hearing because you’ve got the backing of Elon Musk.”
Report at the centre of the exchange was written by Matt Goodwin, who stood as Reform UK’s candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election earlier this year.
The interview comes just days after Nigel Farage indicated he was willing to discuss a possible partnership between Reform UK and Lowe’s Restore Britain party.
