The back-and-forth between Buckingham Palace and the Sussexes seemed to have caused trouble for the sporting event supporting the wounded, sick and injured veterans.
After King Charles’s letter reaffirmed the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as “private citizens”, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and head of the country’s armed forces, believed that participating in Invictus Games would offend the monarch.
However, Charles’s private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, called the general, reassuring them that he had “no problem” with Uganda participating in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games
“We welcome the news that Uganda has confirmed it will continue to be part of the Invictus community and participate in the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, now less than 300 days away,” Rob Owen OBE, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation said in a statement.
“Uganda became our 26th nation earlier this year, joining a growing movement that provides year-round recovery opportunities for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans across the world.”
Meanwhile, when a representative for Prince Harry was approached for a comment, they had no comment on the matter.
However, sources close to the Duke had shared that there was always hope that Uganda would reverse its decision.
When Uganda had withdrawn last week, Palace officials had noted that the King, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the British Armed Force, encourages all organisations that support wounded service personnel.
