King Charles has kicked off his annual summer break in Scotland, at the Castle of Mey, as part of a long-held royal tradition.
The monarch, who is also undergoing cancer treatment, will be staying there for the next couple of weeks to unwind before he resumes his royal duties. The castle, which was originally purchased by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in 1952, was a beloved to Charles’s grandmother and he holds many precious memories.
However, not everything is rainbows and butterflies at the royal residence as a haunting mystery lurks on the top floor and the staff refuse to visit it at any cost.
Visitors and staffers, for generations, have spoken about the ‘Green Lady’ haunting the top floor of the historic place.
Unexplained experiences while touring the castle have been reported such as a figure walking on the upper floor, doors closing by themselves and lights switching off on its own.
Local legend has it that the only daughter of the 14th Earl of Caithness, Lady Fanny Sinclair, had fallen in love with a stable hand. Lady Fanny’s father had banished the stable hand when he discovered the forbidden romance. The heartbroken woman had stayed by the window waiting for him but ended up jumping off of it.
Meanwhile, another urban legend claimed that the young lovers were eloping when they got caught and Lady Fanny was locked up on the top floor, eventually leaping off to her death.
There is no confirmation or evidence of the story, but it has become one of the most intriguing aspects of the Castle of Mey.
