Mina Chan, a prominent K-pop influencer with more than 80,000 followers on TikTok, has taken her own life during a livestream.
The 26-year-old influencer based in Seoul was found dead at her residence in Yongsan-gu on August 5 after police received a call from an acquaintance around 5:33 a.m.
Viewers report that during her livestream, she appeared visibly disturbed and urged law enforcement to intervene. However, when officers arrived, they found her already dead. The livestream has since been removed from TikTok.
The news of her demise has been confirmed by her sister in an emotional social media post where she wrote: “My beloved old sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers.”
The tragedy follows intense online harassment Chan faced after an incident at an ENHYPEN concert in July. Chan was a superfan who used to attend multiple fansign events. In July, she attempted to have member Sunoo pass flowers to Japanese member Ni-Ki during the show.
Afterwards, Ni-Ki went live and said he was uncomfortable (although he never mentioned names). However, many fans accused her of overstepping boundaries and seeking attention.
On July 31, she apologised publicly on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “By attending ENHYPEN’S fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was. I deeply regret the rude behaviour I exhibited in America.”
Though she made an apology, reports say that Chan still faced hateful comments from some people online. The tragic death of the artiste has led to criticism against cyberbullying from fan circles, where some have paid tributes to her and denounced the cyberbullying she had to face.
