A new regulation has banned a primary chemical used in gel nail products across England, Scotland, and Wales.
The ban, effective from August 15, 2026, prohibits manufacturers and importers from introducing new cosmetic products that have trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, commonly known as TPO, in their compositions.
The chemical acts as a photoinitiator and helps gel polish cure under UV light. However, it is reclassified as a “Category 1B” reproductive toxicant following animal studies linking high exposure to fertility and reproductive issues.
Despite the ban being named as “gel nail ban”, industry experts clarified that gel manicures themselves have not been outlawed. The regulation specifically targets TPO, and many salons have already opted for TPO-free formulations.
For now, the ban is being implemented gradually. While manufacturers can no longer sell new TPO-containing products, salons may continue using existing stock until February 14, 2027, when the sale or distribution of TPO polishes becomes entirely illegal. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association stressed that the ban is a precautionary measure rather than a response to an immediate danger.
