Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver’s 2-year-old son died in an accidental drowning at the family’s Houston home in late June.
Harris County sheriff’s officials reported that they responded to a call about a toddler found unresponsive in the pool. The child was taken immediately to the hospital but pronounced dead.
The investigation is still ongoing into how the incident unfolded. As of now, it is unclear whether the incident occurred at Oliver’s residence or elsewhere in the neighbourhood.
Although devastated by the tragedy, Oliver reported to Bills’ training camp on July 28 and regularly took part in practice sessions. He featured in last week’s preseason game between his team and the Carolina Panthers but has since stopped practicing because he is suffering from an undisclosed injury.
The defensive player didn’t join the team as they travelled to Cleveland for their latest preseason match against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
Aged 28, Oliver is a key player of the team, having been selected in the first round in 2019. The former Houston standout boasts 30 career sacks and has become one of the best interior defensive players in the league.
The Bills organisation has offered its full support to Oliver and his family. The family has urged privacy and prayers during this difficult time.
A source close to the team said: “Our thoughts are with Ed and his family during this incredibly difficult time. The entire Bills family is heartbroken.”
