COVID-19s summer comeback: What you need to know about latest surge
COVID-19’s summer comeback: What you need to know about latest surge

The number of COVID-19 cases has been increased in the United States, with infections growing or likely growing in 47 states.

As reported in Wastewater data, coronavirus concentrations surged 105% in August in comparison to July, with the South and West leading the increase. While overall national activity remains low, experts warn that the infection is likely to grow as the summer travel season is here.

The virus COVID-19 has developed a seasonal pattern where it infects individuals twice every year, contrary to influenza and RSV that infect people during the winter months alone. The current increase in cases started in July, and this is similar to what we have been experiencing since 2022.

There are comparatively less number of people being hospitalised and reported deaths, with emergency department visits classified as “very low” nationally. But vulnerable populations including older adults, infants, and immunocompromised individuals face elevated risks.

What can you do

Health officials suggest that if any individual experiences the same symptoms as COVID, he/she should stay at home and consider wearing masks in crowded indoor places. The updated COVID-19 vaccine targeting the XFG variant is expected in September.

At the same time, the wave of increasing numbers of covid cases in China has begun to ease, with most cases remaining mild.
