Europe’s biggets clubs are racing after reports suggest Man Utd wonderkind; JJ Gabriel traveled to Spain for possible talks with Barcelona.
After 15-year prodigy Gabriel informed United he wanted to cancel his registration in order to become a free agent with immediate effect, in a notice sent on September 15, the transfer saga heated up.
Multiple UK media outlets have reported that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris St-Germain are vying to sign JJ Gabriel, whose real name is Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel.
What do Premier League rules say about cancelling a registration?
Under Premier League rules, clubs cannot sign players to professional contracts until the age of 17 or scholarship agreements until they turn 16.
Therefore, in this context, United can challenge Gabriel’s request to cancel his registration.
Premier League rules state that “During your child’s registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the club, player and their parent/carer).”
Gabriel is set to turn 16 on October 6, when he will be able to sign a scholarship agreement with another Premier League club.
United have rejected his request to join a rival English rival club, which would practically restrict him from signing until the end of the season.
There’s another scenario being reported and that if Gabriel obtains an EU passport through either his father (a former Republic of Ireland international)—or his mother, who has Green-Cypriot roots, he could then join the EU upon turning sixteen.
But any such move for Gabriel would be subject to FIFA approval.
For context, Gabriel and his family submitted a formal request to be de-registered last Thursday after Man Utd’s 5-0 win over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League, in which Gabriel scored a hat-trick.
Gabriel wasn’t even named in England’s youth squad revealed on Friday, September 18, despite the fact that he had played England U17 most recently in March and has not trained with United since then.
However, Telegraph reported on Thursday, September 17, that England were hoping to call up the wonderkid, but amid the transfer buzz, they halted the plans in lieu of he may not being in the best of physical or mental state to perform on an international assignment.
United head coach Michael Carrick when asked about Gabriel on Friday, September 17, said, “I think he’s a young boy, JJ, and I think it’s important that we certainly don’t play anything out here.”
Gabriel has scored two goals in his first two Premier League U-21 appearances for United this season but didn’t play against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday, September 18.
