For the first time, the world has seen the profoundly moving final resting place of Norway’s beloved King Harald V, who passed away peacefully on 28 August at the age of 89.
Laid to rest in the historic Royal Mausoleum at Akershus Castle in Oslo, the late monarch now lies alongside his parents and grandparents — a full circle for Norway’s first King born on Norwegian soil in over 600 years.
His sarcophagus is not just a coffin, but a work of art and love.
It honours his lifelong passion for sailing. Crafted from Sunnmore — a rare green stone that absorbs carbon dioxide — it reflects the deep love he and Queen Sonja shared for the environment.
The emotional images of King Harald’s final resting place has been shared for the first time with surprise updates.
Following King Harald’s death, the throne has passed to his son, King Haakon, with Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra now heir.
“The sarcophagus thus brings together what has been important to each of them into a common resting place,” the Palace said.
Meanwhile, the lid is adorned with the royal regalia, including the crown, orb, sceptre, and sword, inlaid with peridot, a green gemstone. The royal coat of arms is cast in bronze and reproduced at the foot of the sarcophagus.
