Olivia Rodrigo was inspired to write her song, the cure, after a deep conversation with a friend which made her realise some of her feelings that she was trying to sweep under the rug.
The 23-year-old pop superstar was looking to write a love album when she wrote what turned out to be, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.
Speaking about writing her second single, Rodrigo said, “I actually remember vividly being in my friend’s jeep. And I was sitting in the passenger seat and I was talking to him and I was just like, you know, I’m making this record and I’m in love and I love this person. And I’m just like so miserable so much of the time. I’m like very unhappy.”
The drop dead hitmaker continued, in conversation with Song Exploder, “And I was like, I don’t know why I can’t like, I just want to write love songs. And I remember him expressly telling me, he’s like, you have to write about how you’re actually feeling.”
Fans flocked to the comments, and wrote, “I always wondered how that first feeling of writing sad songs while actively being in the relationship that everyone perceives as perfect must have been. especially bc they hadn’t broken up yet and everyone expected a love album.”
Another added, “all hail olivia’s friend,” while many guessed that the friend was Conan Gray, and asked, “conan?”
