Peter Byrne, the British singer and musician best known as a member of the 80s new-wave duo Naked Eyes, has died at 74.
Byrne died “peacefully” after a brief illness on Sept. 14 in Los Angeles, according to an announcement on Naked Eyes’ website.
Born in Islington, North London, in June 1952, Byrne co-founded Naked Eyes with Rob Fisher in 1982. The two had been college friends and previously performed with Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal in the band Neon.
Naked Eyes’ debut album, released in the U.K. as Burning Bridges and in the U.S. under the band’s name, peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard 200.
The duo scored major hits with Always Something There to Remind Me, which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Promises, Promises, which peaked at No. 11.
Always Something There to Remind Me was a cover of the 1963 song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick.
Their second album, Fuel for the Fire, produced two more charting singles in 1984: When the Lights Go Out and (What) In the Name of Love.
Byrne later contributed backing vocals to Stevie Wonder’s Part-Time Lover and continued working in music, including songwriting for film and television.
Following Fisher’s death in 1999, Byrne pursued a solo career and released several albums. A remastered Burning Bridges was issued in 2025.
Byrne is survived by his children Merlin, Dylan and Chloe, siblings Eileen, Sandy, Carol and Steve, and ex-wife Elena.
