A Kelvin wave 2026 is a massive but slow-moving pulse of warm water. It spans thousands of miles and travels beneath the ocean surface, carrying warm water from the western Pacific toward the Americas.

How does the Kelvin wave form?
During a strong El Niño, trade winds that normally blow from South America toward Asia weaken or reverse. Without those winds holding it in place, warm water piled up in the western Pacific surges eastward along the equator.
