Nirvana is remembering late frontman Kurt Cobain 32 years after his tragic death.
Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic reunited on stage during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, as the iconic rock band received the Video Vanguard Award
Accepting the award alongside touring guitarist Pat Smear, the band credited Cobain’s artistic vision for shaping Nirvana’s iconic music videos and influence.

“The idea for [our] videos grew out of the vision of one of the greatest artists of all time, Kurt Cobain,” Novoselic said. “Kurt was one of one. None of us could have imagine our band or our sound or our aesthetic would mean so much to so many people.”
Novoselic added that the band’s music continues to connect with listeners because of its authenticity, concluding, “Kurt would have loved that legacy.”
MTV announced Nirvana as this year’s recipients on September 9, marking 34 years since their memorable 1992 VMAs debut.
Nirvana disbanded in 1994 following Cobain’s death by suicide at age 27. Grohl and Novoselic have reunited occasionally since then, including at the band’s 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, and daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, were not present at Sunday’s ceremony.
