
An intense storm system brought unprecedented rainfall to parts of Nebraska and Texas, causing flooding and travel disruptions in Nebraska on Thursday morning.
The Lincoln Airport recorded 6.15 inches of rain on Wednesday, breaking the record for the most precipitation on any day, previously 5.45 inches, set in 1910. September has recorded 11.49 inches of rainfall, making it the wettest September on record.
Flash flood warnings have been issued in the Omaha region, where over 3,000 customers have faced power outages. Highway 370 has been shut down between 31st Street and JFK Freeway because of the overflow of Big Papillion Creek. Sarpy County has experienced vehicle trapping at 168th and Harrison Streets due to the flood. A mudslide has led to the closure of Old Lincoln Highway in western Iowa.
Omaha Public Schools informed parents about the disruption in the bus schedule due to the floods blocking the way to many bus depots. Ralston Public Schools also informed about the possible disruption in routes.
Texas saw rains pour down into North Texas, resulting in flash floods and road closures on I-35 in Denton County. DFW International Airport had the most delays and cancellations in the nation.
A flood warning was active, with more weather expected until Friday. There was a Level 3 out of 4 risk of flooding in Austin, as 1,200 state TxDOT crews were dispatched to deal with the flooding.
Officials asked people not to drive into flooded areas, reminding them of the rule, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Dryer weather is forecast for Nebraska over the weekend, while Texas may have lingering rain on Saturday.
