Johnny Depp is getting into the Christmas spirit—but his version comes with ghosts, warnings and a seriously grim Scrooge.
Paramount Pictures dropped the first trailer for Ebenezeron Thursday, October 1, giving fans their first proper look at Depp as Charles Dickens’ famously miserable moneylender.
Directed by Ti West, the new take on A Christmas Carol hits theaters November 13.
“The name you know, the story you don’t,” the film’s official synopsis teases, promising a fresh spin on Dickens’ 1843 classic.
And Scrooge won’t be facing Christmas Eve alone. Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley and Ian McKellen also star, with McKellen appearing as the ghost of Jacob Marley.
In the trailer, Marley delivers the familiar warning about the three spirits coming for Scrooge—but this time, things look considerably darker.
The role also marks Depp’s first major Hollywood studio release since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Since then, he has appeared in the French film Jeanne du Barryand directed Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
Depp actually teased his Scrooge transformation earlier this summer when he made a surprise appearance as the character at San Diego Comic-Con.
A source previously described Ebenezeras a “very special project for him,” adding, “He’s back in a character role, which he loves. He really comes to life when he’s in those characters — they’re in his DNA.”
And Scrooge may only be the beginning. Depp is also set to star alongside Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz in Day Drinker, due in March 2027.
Ebenezerarrives in theaters November 13.
