A US district judge has ordered the reinstatement of any history or science signs that were removed from the public monuments.
The judge ruled that the White House’s actions “set a dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization.”
The order came in the backdrop of president Donald Trump’s executive order in March 2025 titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”
Trump instructed the secretary of interior to survey monuments and statues to see if they had been changed after January 2020 to represent a “false construction of American history.”
In February this year, a group of conservation organizations filed a lawsuit challenging the 2025 executive order of deinstallation of signage and material at historical monuments.
The plaintiffs include The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), the Association of National Park Rangers, and the American Association for State and Local History.
Massachusetts district judge Angel Kelley penned the order.
“Under the guise of promoting American dignity, this administration seeks to share a limited history by ordering the removal of all signs, displays, and interpretative exhibits at national parks.
“That do not align with its preferred narrative, thereby telling half-truths,” judge Kelley wrote in the order.
The Trump administration has a three week deadline to comply with the order.
