Five people were killed after an Amazon cargo plane went beyond a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The aircraft, Boeing 767, crossed a road and struck several vehicles resulting in the killing of five and five others were injured, who were receiving medical care.
The crashed plane is operated by 21 Air for Amazon Prime Air and it was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it failed to stop while landing at around 2 p.m.
Videos from the incident shows the plane bursting into flames after the incident as emergency responders rushed to the scene. More than 60 personnel participated in controlling the blaze, search and rescue operation.
Three out of the five injured were taken to hospital in critical condition. The pilot and co-pilot who were trapped inside the cockpit were rescued.
Airport operations were on halt for three hours after the incident due to rescue operations. More than 160 flights were cancelled and hundreds of others faced delays.
Attention has now turned to why the plane could not stop.
Videos of the landing appear to show the aircraft staying in the air for a considerable distance after reaching the runway.
Aviation experts said investigators will likely look at whether it touched down too far along the runway and, if so, why the pilots did not abandon the landing and go around for another attempt.
Weather, wind, the aircraft’s speed and its braking system are also expected to be examined.
The plane itself was 32 years old. It originally flew passengers before being converted into a freighter in 2015.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash.
Amazon said it was “heartbroken” by the deaths and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
The company said it will fully cooperate with the investigation.
