St Helens has appointed current Australia coach Kevin Walters to lead the team from next season after the World Cup.
The 58-year-old led the Kangaroos to a 3-0 win over England in last year’s Ashes tour and will remain in contract with the team for the World Cup campaign in October.
His new contract with the Saints will begin in 2027 with the English Super League, the pinnacle of rugby league.
On Walters’s long list of portfolios are the Catalans Dragons in Super League as well as the Queensland and National Rugby League side Brisbane Broncos.
Speaking with Fox League on Thursday, August 20, revealed that the talks with St Helens began last month or so.
“And it just progressed from there,” said Walters.
“I had a good think about it, and my wife and my family had a good think about it,” he added.
“We feel like it’s a wonderful opportunity to go and coach at such an iconic club, not just in world rugby league but also in the UK.
“They’re one of the leading brands in rugby league and in sport,” Walters beamed.
Walters’ three-year deal with the English is reportedly valued at $2 million.
The whopping multi-million dollar deal makes it the richest signing in the club’s 153-year history.
