Late-night flights were cancelled at Bristol Airport due to defects in the runway system which caused disruptions for travellers arriving at or leaving from the airport.
Due to this the airport had to close down air traffic until engineers completed an assessment and repair of the defect; the defects were a safety concern because all runway equipment and systems need to be functioning prior to safe takeoff or landing.
Bristol Airport is the UK’s second busiest regional airport and serves over 10 million people each year.
Flights operate 24 hours per day but flights are restricted during certain times of the night. The time period that includes flights being restricted are between 23:30 and 06:00.
Passengers are requested to contact their airline(s) to confirm any schedule updates or travel information as flights may experience a delay, cancellation, or changes depending on when the defect will be repaired.
Engineers are currently assessing and repairing the runway and it is anticipated they will complete their work before full-scale operations resume at the airport.
The disruption comes during a busy period for the airport, with hundreds of flights operating to destinations across the UK and Europe.
