The Indiana Fever beat the Las Vegas Aces 99-89 in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series to stay alive in the WNBA playoffs.
Caitlin Clark rose to the occasion and scored 27 points, the career-best 15 assists in a game (regular season or playoffs), and led the Fever to a hard-fought win against the Aces on Tuesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Fever guard was all guns blazing from the very start of the game as she scored 14 points and 11 assists by halftime.
In a postgame interview, Clark disclosed the game strategy, saying, “We diagramed the first play in the locker room, and (coach Stephanie White) told everybody I was going to make it.”
“So I was just trying not to let everybody down because we were all visualizing that I was going to make it. So, I need to get the night started off right…just staying aggressive,” she explained.
Clark fouled out with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter, but by then, she had done her damage.
In the fourth quarter, the Aces gradually reduced Indiana’s lead; Clark hit a 3-pointer to put the Fever up 87-77.
Moments later, the WNBA’s No. 3 scorer, knocked down a 30-footer over three-time defensive player of the year, A’ja Wilson, yelling towards the crowd as the lead grew to 11.
The Tuesday night Game 2 was a power-packed show of the Fever trio of Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston, as their combined score totals 89 points, the same score the Aces score in total.
Mitchell scored 26 points for her fourth postseason 25-point game, while Boston posted 22 points, five assists and four rebounds for her second 20-point game in the playoffs.
With a win or go-home Game 3, as the series is tied 1-1, is scheduled for October 1 at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
