The 2026 Chicago Air and Water Show faced an unexpected delay Saturday morning, August 15, as heavy rain and low cloud ceilings forced organisations to push back the start time.
Initially, the show was scheduled for 10:30 a.m., but now it will start around noon. As reported by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, producers are coordinating directly with the Federal Aviation Administration to assess safer flight conditions and ensure the safety of performers, attendees, and event staff.
Till 12:15 p.m. (local time), a flood advisory has also been issued for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will counties. The weather disruptions followed Friday’s cancelled practice runs, when low ceilings forced the U.S. Army Golden Knights to scrap their scheduled jump.
Forecasters indicate optimism that skies would clear enough for the afternoon performances. This year’s lineup includes the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.
Military demonstrations include the F-22 Raptor, the Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II, and a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue exhibition. Furthermore, civilian performers such as Kevin Coleman of the Red Bull Air Force and Susan Dacy in the Super Stearman biplane will also take to the skies.
The event stretches along Chicago’s lakefront from Fullerton Avenue to Oak Street, with North Avenue Beach serving as the c entral hub.
Around 2 million people are expected to attend the event. Organisers urge attendees to use public transit, with additional CTA buses and trains in service as parking is limited.
The show is free of cost and open to the public.
