David Krumholtz says he’s walking away from acting after decades in Hollywood, describing himself as “frustrated, fed up, fried” following a career that spanned Oppenheimer, Superbad, 10 Things I Hate About You, Numb3rsand dozens of other credits.
The actor, 47, said he has no clear plan for how he’ll support himself going forward, but feels compelled to step back and reassess whether there’s a more meaningful path ahead of him.
The announcement comes after a stretch of public turbulence for Krumholtz, who developed a reputation in recent months for volatile social media exchanges.
In June, he found himself at the center of a viral controversy on Threads after a heated exchange with a content creator escalated, prompting other users to resurface old, contentious posts of his from over a decade earlier, including alleged past harassment allegations that he has disputed.
He ultimately deleted the posts and made his account private amid the backlash, which also sparked public concern from some observers about his wellbeing, including unverified claims about a bipolar diagnosis circulating online.
Despite the recent noise, Krumholtz’s résumé remains one of the more respected character-actor careers of his generation, with his Oscar-winning turn as physicist Isidor Isaac Rabi in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimerwidely regarded as among his finest performances.
He’s also spoken candidly in the past about mental health struggles tied to his career, including a nine-month breakdown and bout of agoraphobia after Numb3rsended in 2010, followed by a thyroid cancer diagnosis the following year.
He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Vanessa, and their two children.
