Did Nazi Germany Dictator Adolf Hitler kill his niece? The question has resurfaced after 95 years in light of new evidence discovered by a historian.
For almost a century, Hitler had one important thing separating him from the mysterious death of his 23-year-old half-niece: he wasn’t supposed to have been there.
Newly discovered records are now raising questions about that alibi.
Angela “Geli” Raubal was found dead from a gunshot wound inside Hitler’s Munich apartment in September 1931.
The gun belonged to Hitler.
Her death was officially ruled a suicide, and the accepted account said her body was discovered on September 19.
By then, Hitler had already left Munich for Nuremberg.
But German historian Harald Sandner has found documents in Munich’s archives that tell a different story.
An official death-register entry records Raubal’s body as being discovered at 10:15 a.m. on September 18, a day earlier than previously believed.
Two separate death notices also give September 18 as the date.
That matters because records indicate Hitler didn’t leave Munich until later that afternoon.
If the newly discovered documents are accurate, Hitler could therefore have been in the city when Raubal died.
It still doesn’t prove he killed her.
Thomas Weber, a historian of Nazi Germany at the University of Aberdeen, examined copies of the documents and told CNN they appear credible. But he cautioned against jumping from a broken alibi to a murder conclusion.
Questions about Raubal’s death have followed Hitler for decades.
Historians have described his relationship with his half-niece as unusually close and controlling. The pair were also believed to have argued shortly before her death over her desire to leave Munich for Vienna.
