A sequel to 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveshas already been written, but co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein says it likely won’t get made, pointing to the economics of big-budget filmmaking as the sticking point.
Speaking to ScreenRantat San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein confirmed that he and longtime collaborator John Francis Daley completed a script after being hired to develop a follow-up.
“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it,” Goldstein said.
“I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
Honor Among Thievesearned strong reviews on release, currently holding a 91% critics’ score and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant.
Despite the reception, the film grossed $205 million worldwide against a reported $150 million production budget, a result generally considered underwhelming once marketing costs are factored in, with some estimates placing the film’s true break-even point closer to $375 million.
The path to a sequel has also been complicated by significant behind-the-scenes upheaval since the film’s release.
Paramount, which co-produced and distributed the original, was acquired by Skydance Media in 2025 and remains tied up in litigation over its pending Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
Meanwhile eOne, once a Hasbro subsidiary tied to the Dungeons & DragonsIP, was sold to Lionsgate in late 2023.
A separate live-action Dungeons & Dragonsseries that had been ordered at Paramount+ was scrapped in 2024, though Hasbro has since found a new home for a reworked take on the property, The Forgotten Realms, in development at Netflix from Shawn Levy and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello.
For now, Goldstein and Daley’s finished screenplay remains without a green light, and no timeline for reconsideration has been announced.
