Water in the second-largest European river, Danube River, has dropped to alarmingly low levels amid worsening effects of climate change as the continent battles extreme heatwaves and drought conditions.
The low water levels have also brought the hydropower generation plants on the brink of shutting down. Though, the traffic is flowing from the river but the water levels have made it difficult for bigger to pass through the river, which flows through 10 nations.
According to the Associated Press, the critically low-levels have helped dozens of sunken German warships in World War II to emerge into view, offering a fascinating distraction from the scorching heat.
The Nazi flagged ships of Germany’s Black Sea fleet, some still laden with weapons, have surfaced in the middle of the river separating Serbia and Romania near the Serbian port of Prahovo. Report suggests that the ships were deliberately sunk by Nazi soldiers while retreating from Romania during WWII.
Around 200 vessels were sunk in the river in a bid to slow down the advances of Soviet forces deeper into Europe in September 1944; however, despite their best efforts the Nazi forces had to surrender in May 1945.
Some of the ships were earlier removed from the river and some were left because of the explosives in them.
