Everything to know about Instagram’s new wordmark

Instagram has updated its first wordmark after nearly a decade, announced by head Adam Mosseri.

Unveiled on August 13, 2026, the new wordmark provides a modern take on the original design.

Adam Mosseri referred to it as “cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram.”

It is based on a custom font called “Instagram Sans.” According to the brand resource text you included at the bottom of your first paste, Instagram created a custom typeface specifically for this update.

“We created a custom typeface, updated our gradient and colour palette, and redefined our approach to layout and design,” the brand page says.

The most distinctive part is the cursive-style “s” and “r”, which received mixed reactions from users. However, AI was used in the redesign. Articles confirm that this was entirely done by Instagram’s design team. The wordmark has appeared to be a “merging cypher,” taking the shapes of letters from different handwriting systems and squishing them into an English word for a visual puzzle.

But the update has sparked immediate backlash and mockery across the platform. Users quickly pointed out that the stylised “r” in the new wordmark resembles a “z,” making the logo read as “Instagzam” or “Instaguam.” Some have pointed out that this design choice may confuse younger generations who never learned cursive writing.

Those who do not see the new wordmark yet should update their app version.
