
The Farmers’ Almanac has released its highly awaited winter weather forecast for the 2026-27 season, providing an early glimpse at what Americans can expect this winter.
As stated by the publication, which has made long-term weather forecasts since 1818, winter will be characterized by alternating periods of cold, snowy weather and mild breaks throughout most of the nation. In the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley areas, the almanac foresees “cold, snowy periods” with the average temperatures being close to normal.
The forecast warns about rapid movements of fast-moving clippers, sudden cold outbreaks, and short periods of snowy weather. For the Great Lakes, the forecast predicts rapid snow squalls, brisk winds, and frequent cold snaps. This will be a winter that will keep changing its patterns and will have difficulty getting into a certain routine because of frequent thawing and freezing, and road and field conditions may be constantly changing.
Farmers’ Almanac predicts that the El Niño effect will be a major factor throughout the winter period. El Niño is a climate phenomenon caused by unusually warm waters in the central and eastern parts of the tropical Pacific Ocean.
The usual El Niño winter often shifts south, triggering storms and moisture across the southern part of the country. The Great Lakes usually end up on the quieter northern side of that pattern, increasing the likelihood of a winter that is warmer and drier overall.
According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the forecast was made using a unique method that takes into account solar activity, the moon’s influence, recurring natural patterns, and history of weather events. According to the publication, the regional forecasts of the Farmers’ Almanac have a probability of being accurate from 80% to 85%, whereas scientific studies show the accuracy rate of the almanac’s predictions to be about 50% on average, which is no different from pure guesswork.
