A U.S. federal judge has temporarily paused an order that sought President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
The BBC had sought in a lawsuit filed against U.S. President Donald that requires the latter’s Revocable Trust to furnish tax returns, financial statements and ownership records from nearly 400 ventures.
Trump’s attorney had filed the court on Wednesday, August 5, to halt the BBC request seeking access to the president’s financial statements.
US district Judge, Roy Altman on Wednesday, August 5, issued the temporary pause while he considers Trump’s request to revise and narrow the scope of the multi-billion dollar libel suit.
At the centre of the legal feud is BBC’s 2024 documentary, focused on the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, broadcast in the UK.
The four-page order was penned on Wednesday, August 5, and released the next day, August 6, 2026.
The order states that Trump’s effort to remove his claims that the documentary damaged his brand and businesses could reduce the BBC’s need to obtain his financial records.
Before the 11th ruling arrived on Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett had ruled in favour of the BBC back in July, ruling that Trump’s defamation claims made his reputation and financial details at stake.
“All of President Trump’s brand, properties, and businesses are impugned or said to have been impugned.
“Reputational, economic damages, all of that is now at issue in this case,” Lett ruled.
The BBC libel lawsuit is part of a wider legal feud by Trump against the British public broadcaster over its critical coverage of the U.S. President.
