  • Ministry says records show about 198 sessions, over 900 visitor entries.
  • Imran Khan has undergone about 30 medical exams since imprisonment.
  • Assessments found Imran “oriented, stable” without acute deterioration.

The government on Saturday rejected what it called misleading reports in foreign media concerning the prison conditions and medical treatment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, saying official records contradicted claims that he was being isolated or denied adequate care.

In a statement, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB) said the reports amounted to “fake propaganda” and stressed that Imran’s imprisonment followed convictions by courts of competent jurisdiction.

“The Government of Pakistan categorically rejects allegations that the convicted prisoner is being subjected to punitive solitary confinement, cruelty or deprivation,” the ministry said.

It said Imran was provided visits, telephone calls, reading material, television access, home-cooked food and exercise equipment, while living in an exclusive seven-cell compound with sleeping, sanitation and exercise facilities.

The ministry also rejected claims that Imran had been completely cut off from his family, citing prison records showing approximately 198 interview sessions involving more than 900 visitor entries.

These included meetings with his sisters, family members, lawyers, doctors and political representatives, while the ministry said he had also been permitted weekly meetings with his wife, the latest recorded on August 4.

According to the ministry, prison records also document telephone, landline and WhatsApp communication with family members in Pakistan and abroad, including a call with one of his sons on March 21. Meetings with his sisters were recorded on August 18, 19 and 25.

The government also rejected allegations that Imran had been denied appropriate medical care.

“Since his imprisonment, the convicted prisoner has undergone approximately 30 medical examinations by specialist teams and medical boards,” the ministry said, adding that these involved Pims, Shifa International, Shaukat Khanum and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, besides regular examinations by the prison doctor.

The ministry said Imran had received specialist treatment for a retinal condition, including five anti-VEGF injections, retinal imaging, medication and follow-up examinations.

It said specialist assessments, including those conducted in July and on August 21, showed him as “oriented, stable” with no recorded acute or unmanaged deterioration.

The ministry also cited comments by Imran’s sister, Dr Uzma Niazi, who it said recently described him as “100 percent fit”, gave a blood pressure reading of 120/80 and said his eye condition had almost completely healed.

The government said Supreme Court directions concerning Imran’s medical examination and treatment had been fully implemented, adding that his sister was present during the examination.

It also noted that the Supreme Court had directed Imran’s family, political party and associated lawyers not to disclose or share his health condition or medical reports with the media or public pending further proceedings.

The ministry said medical matters should be assessed based on clinical records and judicial directions rather than turned into a political controversy.

It also said reasonable regulation of visits and communications, in line with prison rules, court orders and security requirements, should not be portrayed as denial of access.

On claims that Imran’s sons were unable to travel to Pakistan to visit him, the government said both held valid National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis, which it said were recognised travel documents for entry into the country.

The ministry urged foreign media outlets to distinguish between “verified custodial and medical records” and what it described as politically contested allegations
