Grand Theft Auto VI launch is just two months away, and Rockstar has hinted at a major shift in its storytelling.
GTA 6 community is wondering why the publisher has made a paradigm shift when the launch is inching closer.
Rather than the publisher having focused on releasing more gameplay details, it opted to make a key shift in its storytelling similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.
In a recent interview with a French magazine, Trois Couleurs, Rockstar North studio head Rob Nelson has offered some insights, confirming the Rockstar’s next title will be split into chapters like RDR2.
That would bring a shift from GTA 5; Michael, Franklin, and Trevor all shared the focus there, and the story develops between these characters.
While RDR2 uses a story of chapters, where the western epic has six chapters plus an epilogue, each chapter offers a new phase as the characters evolve.
However, much of the details still remain under wraps as to how many chapters the GTA 6 will contain, but Nelson revealed that GTA 6 story will be split into chapters to move the two main protagonists, Jason and Lucia, through the story.
While revealing how the idea was conceived, it was Rupert Humphries (Rockstar Games’ Sr Vice President of Narrative) who came up with the idea first, outlining the initial draft of nearly a page and a half.
It covers where the story characters begin, what happens to them, and where these events lead them next.
This is where the Rockstar further polishes the idea and develops the missions and set pieces around them.
Nelseon pointed to the process as a way to move players around different areas of the map.
Will chapters restrict player freedom in GTA 6?
Splitting the GTA 6 story into chapters gives the development team a framework for deciding when the story should advance through each stage of Jason and Lucia’s journey.
Nelson did make sure one thing: the chapters don’t lock players into a liner route.
While Rockstar remains centred on the core idea of developing GTA 6 around player freedom.
Once the development teams are done with their job of designing the story missions, the Rockstar developers move on to the next task: considering what happens to players who ignore those missions, while still ensuring players’ freedom for those players who want to go “off the rails.”
We can draw a few points from what Rob Nelson has offered: the chapters serve a dual purpose; they shape what players see, but they also quietly help Rockstar manage the story’s development, all without taking away the freedom to explore that has been the hallmark of GTA.
Rockstar has slated the GTA 6 launch for November 19, 2026.
