
Police have not yet released the identity of the man who died after falling from a building at Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh’s St Andrew Square on Wednesday, August 19.
The incident took place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, outside the Harvey Nichols department store in the busy city centre.
Police and ambulance crews quickly responded to the scene, cordoning off the area and erecting a large tarpaulin at the entrance to the store.
A police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, we were called to a report that a man had fallen from height at a building in the St Andrew Square area of Edinburgh. Emergency services attended; however, the man was pronounced dead a short time later. Enquiries are ongoing.”
The incident caused major disruption in the city centre, including the area being completely restricted for pedestrians and traffic. Additionally, Lothian buses diverted its CS1 and ET1 services, with buses bypassing the square and continuing on South St David Street. Multrees Walk remained open to pedestrians.
Investigations into the specific circumstances are currently ongoing.
