Researchers have issued a stern warning for parents and guardians of babies under the age of two stating that any kind of screentime for the toddlers can have long-term and severely negative impacts on their health and development.
Experts from the University of Leeds performed a comprehensive review of how screen exposure affects the health of toddlers and found that it negatively impacts the quality of life.
The review warned that any intentional screen time at all causes:
- Limited language development
- Difficulty sleeping
- Eye health issues
- Increased risk of obesity
In addition to the already mentioned health issues, other harms related to children’s screen time include increased risk of overstimulation, reliance on digital devices for emotional regulation, reduced opportunities to bond with parents and play with peers.
Lead researcher Rafe Clayton warned: “The exposure to screens during the most crucial years of human development has implications for a whole generation and their future quality of life.”
The researchers also urged big technology companies to play their part in improving the quality of life for kids by prohibiting themselves from sharing content which they label as “suitable for children” with parents.
Researchers stated that having exposure to only non-digital toys can improve eating habits among kids.
One expert said taking children outdoors and encouraging time in nature can help reduce screen time. The approach may also support physical development and promote better eye health.
