A USS Abraham Lincoln sailor deployed in the Middle East heard about his father’s detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Sunday, August 23.
The father of a U.S. sailor, who was deployed during the Iran-U.S. war in the Middle East, was detained by the ICE agents, confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security.
Joshua Aviles, the son, shared a post on social media that read, “I’ve been deployed for over nine months, out at sea in the Middle East aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, fighting for a country that has given me everything.”
“I just got a call that my dad was taken by ICE,” added Aviles.
Heartbroken with the news, Aviles explained the context, “We have done everything through immigration to get his green card approved, and we are just waiting.”
Then he described what he went through since he first heard of his father’s detention, adding, “This is heartbroken for me. I don’t know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly being treated like a criminal.”
According to the spokesperson for the U.S. Homeland Security Department, the border patrol detained Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan national, after a vehicle search at a security checkpoint in Key West, Florida.
“Having a family member in the military is not a free pass to violate nation’s laws,” said the DHS.
The U.S. aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln left the Middle East on Saturday, August 22, and had not docked in more than 200 days.
As per the latest update, the USS George Washington aircraft carrier arrived in the Middle East just last week, where it is set to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.
