Joe Jonas is opening up about a frightening accident that left him trapped in the water between two boats during a getaway to Portofino, Italy, sharing the story on the September 23 episode of The Morgan Stewart Showpodcast.
Jonas, 37, was vacationing with girlfriend Tatiana Gabriela, host Morgan Stewart and her husband, Jordan McGraw, aboard a crewed yacht when the incident occurred while he attempted to board the yacht’s smaller tender boat.
“The boat is getting pretty close to the yacht, but as I take a step, I think a wave came in and it pushed the boat far out from the yacht,” Jonas recalled.
“It sounds like the bougiest problem, but it was terrifying because then I slipped and fell between these two boats.”
Making matters worse, the crew member trying to help him aboard was pulled into the water as well.
“The first mate tried to grab me, but he also fell in after me,” Jonas said.
Fully clothed with his phone still in his pocket, Jonas surfaced between the two vessels and had to think quickly, wary of swimming toward the yacht’s rear ladder because of the nearby engines.
“My first instinct was, ‘I need to get away from these two boats,'” he said, explaining he ultimately climbed directly onto the tender instead.
The experience left Jonas shaken well after the immediate danger passed.
According to Stewart, who witnessed the fall, the moment felt genuinely dangerous in real time, she recalled fearing the boat could swing back and strike him.
Jonas said his first instinct once safely back on land was to reach out to his daughters, Willa and Delphine, whom he shares with ex-wife Sophie Turner.
“I just need to call them. I need to see them. I need to see their faces,” he recalled thinking.
Reflecting on how quickly the situation could have turned serious, he added, “You realise it could have been any of us. It could have been really bad. It was the best outcome of a bad situation.”
