The witches may be back, but Joey King wasn’t about to tempt fate.
While filming Practical Magic 2, the actress admitted one particular scene left her feeling uneasy enough to reach for sage the moment she got back to her hotel.
“I was a little worried about one thing, I can’t say what it is because it’s a bit of a spoiler,” King revealed.
“I was sitting in the middle of this shape for a while and I was like, ‘Ooh.’ I went back to my hotel after that big sequence [and] I smudged and saged myself.”
Thankfully, her magical cleanup seemed to work.
“Nothing happened,” she added.
Co-star Maisie Williams wasn’t haunted either, though she admitted she had embraced the film’s mystical energy.
“I didn’t have any experiences like that,” Williams said. “But I was doing a lot of tarot cards at the time, and I was doing a lot of smudging.”
The supernatural chatter comes years after original Practical Magic director Griffin Dunne claimed a consultant hired for the 1998 film allegedly left him a curse after a contract dispute—an off-screen tale that has become part of the franchise’s folklore.
Despite the spooky stories, King and Williams say joining the beloved franchise felt more magical than mysterious.
“Sandra just texted us both straight away saying, ‘Welcome, anything you need.’ And that just made us feel so chill,” Williams shared, calling Sandra Bullock “the nicest woman in Hollywood.”
King echoed the praise, saying Bullock “took us under her wing as her daughters,” while adding that Bullock and Nicole Kidman “are the best duo ever.”
Turns out, the only real spell on the Practical Magic 2 set was Hollywood kindness—with just a little sage, just in case.
