John Mulaney could be trading punchlines for spy gadgets.
The comedian is reportedly in early talks to star in a new Get Smart reimagining currently in development at Warner Bros., potentially putting Mulaney in the shoes of an unlikely secret agent.
Seth Grahame-Smith is writing the screenplay, with Charles Rovan and Andrew Lazar attached as producers.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but if the project moves forward, Mulaney’s sharp comedic timing could bring a very different flavor to the classic spy spoof.
Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Get Smartfirst premiered on NBC in 1965. The series ran for five seasons and followed Maxwell Smart, a famously bumbling secret agent played by Don Adams.
Barbara Feldon and Edward Platt also starred.
Hollywood previously revisited the franchise in 2008, when Peter Segal directed a feature adaptation starring Steve Carell as Smart, alongside Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson.
The movie proved to be a solid box-office performer, earning $230 million worldwide.
Now, Mulaney may be the latest comedian to step into the world of Get Smart.
Nothing is official yet, and the project remains in the early stages of development. But if Mulaney really does get the call, one thing is already clear: the spy game is about to get a lot more sarcastic.
