Jonathan Bailey is leaving Sunday in the Park With George following Ariana Grande’s exit from the upcoming West End revival.
Bailey made the announcement on Tuesday, September 1, seemingly suggesting that his decision was based on his former Wickedcostar leaving the production as well.
“Ari is one of my dearest friends, and my support for her is unwavering,” he began in a statement shared to his Instagram Story.
The Bridgertonstar continued, “After much consideration, I have decided to step back from Sunday in the Park with George. This brilliant, introspective musical has been a real passion project for me, and I feel incredibly lucky to have shared in its journey with this team.”
Reflecting on the weight of the show’s central relationship, Bailey added, “Among many things, the story explores the deep connection between George and Dot, a beautiful, devoted pairing, and I so look forward to seeing what the two actors who will now take on these roles will create with it.”
Grande and Bailey were announced as the leads in January, with the revival originally set to open in summer 2027. The musical, by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, draws inspiration from Georges Seurat’s famous pointillist painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
Producers said casting discussions are now underway as they reshape the production around a new company.
Last month, Grande’s representative said the singer was “taking a step back” from visibility after completing her eternal sunshine tour, which wraps Tuesday in London.
