King Charles has sent a heartfelt message to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to mark the country’s National Liberation Day, following the monarch’s recent appearance at Windsor Castle for a special photo shoot.
The King used the occasion to reflect on the enduring friendship between Britain and South Korea, while also praising Seoul’s commitment to tackling climate change and moving towards cleaner energy.
His message comes shortly after his sister, the Princess Royal, made a significant three-day visit to South Korea in July.
Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence met President Lee at Cheong Wa Dae and attended a service commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Imjin River.
In a personal message addressed to the South Korean president, Charles wrote:
“Dear Mr. President, On the occasion of Korea’s National Liberation Day, my wife and I extend to you and to the people of the Republic of Korea our heartfelt congratulations and warmest good wishes.
This day provides a valued opportunity to reflect upon the enduring friendship between our nations.
The recent visit of The Princess Royal was an important moment in our partnership, and I am most grateful for the generous hospitality extended to her.
I am deeply encouraged by the strength of our bilateral ties and remain committed to fostering even closer cooperation in the years to come.
As we face the shared challenges of our time, particularly those concerning the climate and the preservation of our natural world, I welcome the Republic of Korea’s commitment to advancing the global green transition.
I hope that our countries will continue to work closely together in pursuit of our clean energy ambitions, including through the transition away from coal power.
My wife and I send our sincerest regards to you and to all Koreans for peace, prosperity and wellbeing in the year ahead.

The King welcomed South Korea’s efforts towards a “global green transition” and expressed hope that both countries could continue working together to reduce their reliance on coal.
