Kohberger blasts case as ‘work of fiction’ in family statement—but can he undo his plea?

Bryan Kohberger’ latest statement has ignited fury from the Idaho victims’ family.

Kohberger, who pleaded guilty to the murder of four University of Idaho students last year.

The Idaho man, Kohberger, has sought court orders to retract his guilty plea, alleging his attorney influenced his decision.

Kohberger, 31, filed handwritten plea on Monday, July 27, at Ada County District Court.

He earlier on Monday, July 27, in his withdrawal plea, stated that he had ineffective assistance of counsel during criminal proceedings” and was “convinced to falsely confess.”

Kohberger has now blasted the case, saying “justice was not served“ in a statement released through his family to the New York Times on July 27.

The outlet reported that Kohberger slammed the authorities’ perspective of the case “myopic” and “work of fiction.”

Kohberger, who was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences for the murders of four students who were roommates: Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen, in a rented girl’s off-campus building in 2022.

After Kohberger filed with the court for overturning his guilty plea after sentencing, it ignited debate about whether Kohberger can claim post-conviction relief.

For the unversed, under Idaho law, the courts may overturn a conviction and grant a plea withdrawal to “correct manifest injustice.”
