Two University of Mississippi students were found dead on Tuesday, September 22, at two separate locations, the university officials have confirmed.
The deaths of two students from Ole Miss who were discovered dead at two separate locations have prompted investigation from local and state law enforcement officials.
The Ole Miss said in a statement that the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office has confirmed there were two students who were found dead.
The University of Mississippi issued a statement on Tuesday, September 22, that reads, “The University is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Lafayette County Metro Narcotics, separately, said in a statement it has launched a probe into the deaths of two students after a packaged kratom was recovered at both locations.
However, the authorities have not confirmed the deaths are connected, but packaged kratom, which was sold from a retail store, was recovered in both investigations.
“We do not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death,” the agency said.
“Local, state and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers as quickly and responsibly as possible.
We are also working closely with the families involved and ask that their privacy be respected during an incredibly difficult time,” it added.
So far the cause of death remains under investigation, and campus police are in contact with local and state law enforcement.
